Hey y’all, I’m a face that most of you probably haven’t seen for quite a bit. My Oppo days were back in high school when I was full of bad ideas and boundless free time, but even since then I’ve always checked Oppo religiously every hour of the day. It’s been a great community to have, and as others have echoed, I can’t think of a more welcoming environment, especially for the LGBT+ car folk like myself and many others.

This may have been done (though I keep a tight eye on Oppo so I don’t think so yet), but I figured I’d drop a poll to see where everyone plans to go after the 16th. I think everyone’s biggest fear is definitely fragmentation where we all end up on different platforms, so this at least lets us visualize the diaspora. I didn’t include the Discord as that’s not so much a platform as just a life-raft (no offense to those who run it, the Discord is a great resource to have). These two projects are the big ones that seem to be the strongest candidates, so they’re in the poll along with whatever else y’all can think of.

I registered for O-L last night and will likely do the same for DT soon.

But I’m not terribly sure how active I’ll be on either (good news for you all!)

I’m sure I can de-content myself by 80% and still be present. I don’t wanna got to an existing platform (DT) and post “DERRRRRRG” all day again , and I suspect O-L will have lower total active members which a good reason not to hog all the real estate. Whereas this Oppo — maybe not so much lately, but back in the day — would sometimes a hundred new posts a day. Shoot, I remember how fast you’d get bumped off the first page.

things naturally evolve over time.  I think Oppo (bearing in mind I’ve only been here 4 years activley) has become more of a closer knit community than a forum or a blog.

I’m currently a member of the discord, DT, and hyphen, to make sure I find out where were going. Like a lot others have hinted, it will be tough to say how active ill be. It’s really hard to go through something like this without losing a lot of people.

Kinda feels like we’ve been forced into a long distance relationship with Oppo. It’s kind of exciting now, keeping track of all the news across all of the formats . However I can already feel that becoming tiring. I adopted the discord months ago when I was thinking of taking a break from regular oppo because politics. So I will probably stick there after this Oppo shuts down until we have a firm plan.

The last online-but-actual-friendships-meeting-people-IRL thing I was on before this dissolved somewhat unceremoniously and I sometimes wish I had done more — but it just happens. Life goes on.

Not to sound positive, but I was quite surprised by the lack of, shall we say, contentious* politics leading up the election. Rough patches during the initial covid shutdown, but compared to years past we did pretty alright in 2020.

I agree, I’m just hard on “it doesn’t belong here.” and “it’s always been a part of Oppo.” is my least favorite reason to keep it.

I don’t participate in those threads but just knowing the turmoil they have caused, and will cause again is irritating. The entire internet is for politics, leave the cars alone.

Maybe O-L would benefit from a single all-encompassing political thread or subblog. Reduce the spam and quarantine the perlatiks. But the current makeup of people there are first glance don’t seem terribly interested  in that stuff so it may work regardless.

I’m waiting to see what the mods do. Ideally I would like to see the same team. I’m concerned that different moderation/rules will lead to a site with a significantly different feel.

I don’t think I can really answer this right now, early in the game but I lean towards the independence of O-L. I’m on DriveTribe for LALD and joined Oppo there as a precaution , but after exploring a bit and posting a couple times I never really felt at home . I’ll likely keep feet in both camps and will try to keep in touch with developments, then follow the herd .

I honestly don’t know, it will probably be the place that feels the most like today. DT feels big, but there seems to be lots of action. O-L feels like a Subcompact OL, less action, I dunno

Pretty good! Just busy, what with projects and exams and whatnot. I’m sure you know how undergrad engineering can be kind of a drag sometimes since there’s just so much to learn. I’ve been commenting on Kinja pretty regularly, though I think I’ve tended towards FP since being ungreyed there about three years ago. I still check Oppo basically every hour, though! How are things with you?

ooof yeah I feel that. Online learning has been.... well rough to say the least and I am only just starting down the engineering path. Ah I never got ungrayed there and I can not stand that whacky new layout of their page so i never go on there any more . But other than that things are good. partner is temp living with me as he doesn’t want to live in dorms on campus rn and I can’t blame him. So that has been a really big plus of all this.

I used to participate in a local forum that mostly centers around a lake. There was talk of enacting a speed limit on the lake and it was HOTLY debated. It nearly brought the whole forum down even with a separate thread for speed-limit-only discussion and they cracked down HARD. That was a passing phase, though, and I’m pretty sure that’s been archived and it’s back to the same old same old. But it still colored my view of a lot of those people and I’ve never been back.

That doesn’t really happen here. This is one of the most civilized places on the whole interwebz and it’s what keeps me coming back.

Oh yeah that’s for sure—two exams these past two days, and even having open-book was still rough for Intro to Communication Systems since I’ve been zoned out for the last six lectures. As for FP, I enjoy the writers (moreso now with Opponauts there) and so far have managed to just click “Latest” for the old-style feed. That’s good to hear! My boyfriend stayed with my family for about a month this summer just to quarantine elsewhere and it was a fun time. Definitely some lifestyle adjustments, but time together is always a good thing!

Yeah that must have been nice to have him with you. Definitely is different but we are enjoying the time together. Definitely feels good to know we could live together.

Amoore100! Oh w ow did I miss talking to you all those y ears ago. Thanks for all the obscure car discussions and ETS2 mods, and for the good memories in general.

Recently I’ve been thinking of writing about cars again ( or delving into car-related v ideo content ), especially now that I’ve matured a bit more with my style. I will certainly take a look at the new Oppo website, but I don’t have any lofty ambitions with it for now . I’m also quite occupied in the real world. Among other things, I am n ow driving a 1988 BMW 325i convertible, and I have become very involved with the LGBT+ community. Time flies.

In either case, it’d be very nice to stay in touch. I’m currently spending a bunch of my time glued to Discord, so please contact me at @Violet #4888 . Thank you for reaching out to me earlier. ^^

Hey dude! I was just thinking about you! I was about to go into your archives and comment on an old post to see if you were still around, so I appreciate you reaching out this time! I loved all your posts and indeed our discussions!

Sounds like we’ve both been preoccupied with real life since about 2018. I always have meant to come back, but unfortunately balancing content with school is tough outside of breaks. Awesome car, and it’s great to hear you’re getting involved!
